Many people have heard about the recent scare with BPA (Bisphenol-A) in plastics such as baby bottles. Parents were encouraged to check the bottom of all their plastic bottles to see if they had a three, six, or seven stamped into the plastic as these containers tend to leach chemicals into the liquids contained in the bottle. Why is BPA such a big deal? The simplest explanation can be found at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, from Dr. Leo Trasand, “Unfortunately, there is no level of exposure that has been identified as being safe. And if that doesn’t concern you just a little bit, consider the fact that a CDC study found BPA in the urine of 95% of the adults sampled, in the blood of pregnant women, in umbilical cord blood and placentas – all at levels that have been shown to alter development in animals.”
Dr. Patricia Hunt of Case Western University in Ohio found in 1998 that “plastics made from polycarbonate resin can leach…BPA…[which] may impair the reproductive organs and have adverse effects on tumors, breast tissue development and prostate development by reducing sperm count.” In 2003, the University of Missouri validated Dr. Hunt’s findings and discovered that just leaving your water bottle out at room temperature was enough to allow leaching, not to mention washing it in the dishwasher, or leaving it in your car while out and about.
People used to think that plastic was safer for the environment, but that is just not the case. Plastic, rather than decomposing, degrades into smaller and smaller pieces that eventually end up in the ocean and into the food chain. “These particles of plastic have been found to be a major cause of fish, animal, and human deformities and diseases.” The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is an area in the Pacific Ocean that has a high concentration of plastic pieces. Scientists estimate that it is anywhere from the size of Texas to twice the size of the United States, but since it is difficult to discern how much plastic is too much, scientists are unsure of the size. Plastic water bottles may seem to be the safe and healthy way to keep yourself hydrated, but the chemicals that are actually present in the bottled water you drink and the amount of plastic bottles that find their way back into the food chain are cause for extreme alarm.
